Nearly 900 of these statues are scattered across the island, all created by inhabitants in the 13th to 16th centuries. However, besides these statues, the island has perhaps a lesser-known history: the Birdman cult. Discussions of cargo cults usually begin with a series of movements that occurred in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The earliest recorded cargo cult was the Tuka Movement that began in Fiji in 1885 at the height of the colonial era's plantation-style economy.
