WebGiant sets work very well with 5/3/1. Jim's writing stresses time efficiency when training, so doing something in between main lift sets is highly encouraged. And mostly thanks to Brian Alsruhe, I now exclusively use a giant set format for everything I do, similar to the 1a-1d format you wrote.
